Fiesta Hurricane Cocktail Recipe

The Fiesta Hurricane is a bold, tropical cocktail that brings the party to your glass. With a base of dark rum and passion fruit juice, brightened by orange and lime, it’s a sweet-tart, fruity drink that goes down dangerously easy. This version adds a spicy chili-salt rim and a float of grenadine for a festive, fiesta-worthy look and taste. It’s perfect for summer gatherings, game day, or any night you want to pretend you’re on a beach.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz (60 ml) dark rum
  • 1 oz (30 ml) passion fruit juice (or passion fruit puree, see Tips)
  • 1 oz (30 ml) fresh orange juice
  • ½ oz (15 ml) fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz (15 ml) simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • ¼ oz (7 ml) grenadine (for the float)
  • Ice cubes (about 1 cup / 150 g)
  • Garnish: orange wheel, lime wheel, and a maraschino cherry
  • For the rim (optional): 1 tbsp (15 g) chili powder, 1 tbsp (15 g) kosher salt, and a lime wedge to wet the rim

Instructions

  1. Prep the rim (optional): On a small plate, mix the chili powder and salt. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a hurricane glass (or any tall glass), then dip the rim into the chili-salt mixture. Set aside.
  2. Mix the cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with the ice cubes. Add the dark rum, passion fruit juice, orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup.
  3. Shake well: Cover and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
  4. Strain and serve: Fill the prepared glass with fresh ice. Strain the cocktail into the glass.
  5. Add the grenadine float: Slowly pour the grenadine over the back of a spoon so it sinks to the bottom, creating a sunset effect.
  6. Garnish: Add the orange wheel, lime wheel, and cherry. Serve immediately with a straw.

Tips

  • Passion fruit puree: If you can’t find passion fruit juice, use 1 oz (30 ml) passion fruit puree (often sold frozen) and reduce the simple syrup to ¼ oz (7 ml), as the puree is sweeter and thicker.
  • Adjust sweetness: Taste before adding the grenadine. If you like it tarter, skip the simple syrup; if you prefer sweeter, add a bit more. The grenadine will add sweetness too.
  • Chili-salt rim: Go easy on the chili powder if you’re sensitive to heat. You can also use Tajín or a mix of chili powder and sugar for a milder kick.
  • Double the recipe: For a pitcher, multiply all ingredients by 8 and mix in a large pitcher with ice. Add the grenadine to each glass individually for the float effect.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Fiesta Hurricane over plenty of ice in a tall hurricane glass. It’s a fantastic pairing with spicy appetizers like jalapeño poppers, buffalo wings, or tacos. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and add a splash of club soda. This drink is for adults of legal drinking age; please drink responsibly.

Variations

  • Frozen Fiesta: Blend all ingredients (except grenadine) with 1 cup (150 g) of ice until slushy, then pour and add the grenadine float.
  • Spiced Rum Swap: Use spiced rum instead of dark rum for a warmer, more aromatic flavor.
  • Mango Hurricane: Replace the passion fruit juice with mango juice or nectar for a different tropical twist.
  • Add a Spritz: Top the finished drink with a splash of club soda (about 1 oz / 30 ml) for a lighter, fizzier texture.

Storage and Reheating

This cocktail is best enjoyed fresh, right after mixing. If you have leftover mixed cocktail (without ice and grenadine), you can store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The citrus juices may lose some brightness, but it will still be safe to drink. Do not freeze the cocktail, as the texture will change. If you’re making a batch ahead, mix everything except the grenadine and ice, refrigerate, and shake with ice just before serving. Always discard any leftover cocktail that has been sitting with ice for more than 2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use light rum instead of dark rum? Yes, light rum will work, but the drink will be less rich and slightly less complex. Dark rum adds a deeper molasses note that complements the passion fruit.

What can I substitute for passion fruit juice? You can use a mix of pineapple juice and a squeeze of lemon, or mango nectar. The flavor will be different but still tropical. Passion fruit puree is the closest substitute.

How can I make a non-alcoholic version? Simply omit the rum and increase the orange juice to 2 oz (60 ml) and add a splash of club soda or ginger ale for fizz. You can also use a rum-flavored extract (a few drops) to mimic the flavor.

Is the chili-salt rim too spicy? It depends on your tolerance. The chili powder adds a mild warmth, not intense heat. If you’re unsure, start with half the chili powder or use a sweet-and-spicy blend like Tajín.

Can I make a big batch for a party? Absolutely. Multiply the recipe by 8 or 10 and mix in a large pitcher. Add the grenadine to each glass individually for the layered look. Keep the pitcher chilled in the fridge and add fresh ice when serving.

Why does my grenadine sink to the bottom? That’s exactly what you want! Grenadine is denser than the other juices, so it sinks. If you pour it too fast, it may mix; pour it slowly over the back of a spoon to keep the layers distinct.
